A colony forming unit (CFU or CFU, englisch colony forming unit, CFU) is a parameter, which plays a role in the quantification of microorganisms, namely, when the number of live cells of microorganisms in a material is intended in the cultural way. A sample is spread evenly on the surface of a culture medium and grown under good conditions. The individual organisms form colonies, which are counted after.
